Improvement of training devices for teachers working in prisons and sharing of educational tools in a Quebec-French professional community intended for education in prisons

This project is supported by the Ministère des Relations internationales, de la Francophonie et du Commerce extérieur of Quebec and the Ministère des Affaires étrangères de la République française (General Consulate of France in Quebec) as part of the 64th session of the Commission permanente de coopération franco-québécoise. It is supervised by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport  of Quebec. It follows on the exploratory mission in Suresnes and Lille in March 2012 by Sonia Bradette, coordinator of educational services in provincial prisons. This mission was also funded by the Ministère des Relations internationales of Quebec.

This project seeks to provide teachers teaching materials for education in prison for a less educated customers as major constraints are present in conventional equipment. Indeed, in detention facilities, students have little or no access to new information technologies (eg. internet). The purpose of the project is to provide teachers with a digital common environment where the sharing of expertise will be preferred, whilst giving priority to the French language. In addition, it will allow teachers to dynamize their practices as well as pass this expertise to the newly appointed in this workplace.

Impact of proposed project:

– Enhance and boost the professionalism of teachers by providing a training in the use of digital resources and a space for exchange of practices and professionals tools dedicated to education in prison.

– Promote significant school learning achievement among the inmate (adapted equipment) to enable successful reintegration.

– Allow the inmate to maintain and enhance their level of competence by providing adequate resources to meet the requirements of the curriculum.

– Develop appropriate act of the adult in a variety of situations of life by promoting autonomy in the proper exercise of social roles.

– Removing barriers to school accessibiliy and persistence.
